Whipsaw Coffee Roasters Gaining International Recognition

From Whipsaw Coffee Roasters (our main coffee provider):

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Receives 93 Point Rating

Coffee Review

We are extremely proud to announce that our Ethiopian Yirgacheffe just received a 93 point rating from Coffee Review (the worlds leading coffee buying guide).

Here's the blind assessment from Coffee Review: "Intensely and complexly floral – lavender, rose, jasmine – with some citrus complication and rounded by a caramelly chocolate. Richly tart acidity; lightly but distinctly syrupy mouthfeel. Lemon and flowers carry into a deep finish. Who Should Drink It: Those who enjoy the soaring and intense Yirgacheffe aromatic fireworks full on; in fact, full tilt."

1st EVER Latte Art Throwdown!

On Thursday October 24th, sponsors Salute Espresso Bar and Whipsaw Coffee  will host a Latte Art Challenge onsite at their coffee bar.

This is an open invitation for Baristas of all levels to come out and compete for CASH, PRIDE, and a GROWLER OF WALKERVILLE BEER.

Barista entry is $5 which goes into the prize pool money (email us your info). Spectators are welcome and encouraged to come and support their Barista; cost for attendance is a mere $2.

RULES: Baristas will be competing head to head and have 2 minutes to put out their best design. The cup of choice will then be judged by our panel of 3 judges.

***For the first few competitions, accessories and tools will be allowed to "etch" designs in the cup. Moving into the new year (2014) we'll move into allowing only "free hand pours" for designs***

Judging Criteria:

  1. Aesthetic Beauty
  2. Definition
  3. Colour Infusion
  4. Degree of Difficulty and Creativity
  5. Speed

Each of the judges compares the drink presented by each of the two competitors in each match and award 1 point to the competitor with the best presentation in each of the five categories. The competitor receiving the most points on each of the judge's scorecard will be the winner in that judges opinion. The competitor advancing will advance by virtue of the judge's scores of 3 to 0 sweep or 2 to 1.

Home Brewing Basics - Demo Sessions

Lets face it, most of your coffee consumption is happening right out of the comfort of your own home.

90% of home brewed coffee is done without the help of a fancy espresso machine so these sessions will not feature espresso based beverages.

Let us help you get the same quality out of your home brew that you’d experience from our coffee bar.

Each week we’ll explore the proper methods, grind, brew temperature, time and ratios needed for French press, V60, Clever, and Syphon.

Class Size – 6 ppl max per session
